Waxing 101

What does each waxing appointment entail?

  • Brazilian- consists of removing hair from front to back
  • Bikini- top, front and sides taken off
  • Underarms- everything taken off
  • Arms- everything taken off
  • Brows- shaped to perfection
  • Nose- everything inside
  • Legs- top to bottom everything off

Is waxing painful?:

Waxing doesn’t have to be painful, as your aesthetician is our job to keep you comfortable throughout each treatment. If you’re wondering how to make waxing less painful, rest assured your aesthetician will walk you through the whole process and use techniques to minimize discomfort. Each waxing spot is different; some will feel more sensitive than other areas will not. No wax will be entirely pain-free; however, your esthetician applies a quick waxing method to ensure less pain and a faster experience. Some clients also prefer to take an ibuprofen or apply a numbing cream 30 minutes before their wax, which can also help make waxing less painful.

There are also two kinds of wax. Soft wax, the wax pulled up with a cloth strip and is used for thinner hair, while hard wax is directly ripped off the skin. Many places will use a combination of the two waxes. If you find you prefer one, don’t hesitate to tell your aesthetician. Your aesthetician will pull the skin taut right before waxing it and then press the waxed area firmly right after. These two things can make waxing much less painful, and a good aesthetician will do them for you. And remember — the more often you wax the less pain you will experience with each visit.

What should I do/not do before waxing?

  • Do take a hot shower before arriving; this will open your pores, making the hair adhere to the wax better.
  • Exfoliate the area the morning of your appointment as this will ensure all hair is removed
  • Don’t apply oils, gel, or lotions prior to your waxing appointment; the wax will not adhere to the skin as oil is a barrier.
  • Have your hair ¼ inch long or a grain of rice in length

How long should the hair be before getting waxed?

Your hair should be ¼ or a grain of rice in the length. The shorter the hair the denser it may be, which can cause the wax to not adhere properly to the hair and bruise your skin. This is easily avoided by waiting about 2-4 weeks for your hair to be at that optimal length. If trimming is needed, leave it to your aesthetician to help you as she knows what hair to trim and which hair to let be.

How long should I wait between waxing appointments?

Facial hair, such as brows, lip, and chin hair grow much quicker than hair on the rest of your body. Since facial hair tends to grow quickly and is more visible, we recommend waxing on a more frequent basis to minimize regrowth. It’s best to wax your underarms every two to three weeks, as it’s obvious when there’s regrowth.

How can I get the best results out of my wax?

Make sure to wear loose and comfortable clothes that you can wear after your wax. After your wax, prioritize aftercare; apply powder or aloe gel to the area to avoid skin redness. Do not touch freshly waxed skin to avoid any possible infections due to your pores being open. After your wax, avoid taking hot showers or baths as it can cause irritation or breakouts. At the end of your appointment make sure to book your next wax; this is crucial to getting the best results out of your wax. While you are between waxes, make sure you do not shave the hair as it will change your hair cycle, making your next appointment less effective. Finally, as always, remember to exfoliate and moisturize.

FAQs

1. Is waxing just for women, or can men get it too?

Waxing is not just for women. We see both waxing for men and waxing for women all the time. From brows to full body, it really just comes down to what you’re comfortable with and what you want done.

2. Can I book full body hair removal in one session?

Yes, you can. A lot of people go for full body hair removal, so everything is done at once. It’s actually really convenient, and you leave feeling completely smooth without having to book multiple appointments.

3. Is there a difference between waxing for men and women?

Not a huge difference, honestly. The process is pretty much the same for both waxing for men and waxing for women. The only thing is hair can be a bit thicker in some areas, especially for men, but your aesthetician knows how to handle that and make the experience as comfortable as possible.
